Cash in now honey, cash in now. It’s official. One year to the day. “Twilight” hit theaters November 20, 2008 and now its sequel, “New Moon” – as directed by Chris Weitz will race into theaters for a November 20, 2009 date (Original filmmaker, Catherine Hardwicke, was of course summarily dismissed the second she even thought this might be a bit of a quick turnaround).
But no, of course they’re not rushing things. No, of course not. Also slated to open on on the same Thanksgiving weekend day in 2009 according to Variety is Warner Bros. “Sherlock Holmes,” Sony animated cartoon “Planet 51” and MGM’s untitled “Three Stooges” project.
“New Moon” is less vampire-centric and revolves more around Werewolves (Booberry appears in the next installment, don’t worry), so that means they’ll be two lupine films next November as Benicio del Toro’s “The Wolf Man,” (with Emily Blunt and Anthony Hopkins) has moved from an April 3, 2009 release to November 6.
Meanwhile, the newly appointed director of the Stephenie Meyer-penned “Twilight” franchise, Chris Weitz is taking a preemptive strike at any potential backlash by penning an apologist letter to the fans which has been posted on Deadline Hollywood. Most of all Chris Weitz says don’t worry people, Chris Weitz is the man, errr.. person, for the job.
After a long ass-kissy rim job to the fans about passion, being entranced by the novels (ok, now we know he’s lying) and being bewitched by this and that, he gets down to the naysayers.
“To those that doubt that as a male director I can capture Bella’s experiences, I can only say that emotion is universal and that my work has often involved working with some of the most talented actresses in the world.”
Ew, he’s trying to seriously justify his talents to 13-year-old girls? God. C’mon, anyone worried that Weitz is not the woman for the “Twilight” job just needs to take a close look at his films and not worry. Dude directs films like he has no balls anyhow. Similarly, soccer mom author/muumuu enthusiast, Meyer has written her own plea for calm on her website and tried to assure her coterie of obsessed teenage fans that all will be well and that they shouldn’t panic or slit their wrists, she’s talked with the director (cue: impressed pre-teen oohs and aahs).
“I’ve had the chance to talk to Chris, and I can tell you that he is excited by the story and eager to keep the movie as close to the book as possible. He is also very aware of you, the fans, and wants to keep you all extremely happy. (Torches and pitchforks are not going to be necessary.)”
There you have it tweeners and Twilighters, meltdown avoided, the crisis is over. Everything is perfect in “Twilight” world! Have a nice day!
It sucks that the final book will not be published due to a leak on the net!
