Tribeca Film Festival: 15 Must-See Movies

“Low Tide”
An original take on a buried treasure story, the feature marries a gritty tale of thrills and double crosses with an Amblin-esque adventure story, “Low Tide” is like an old school adventure thriller from first-time filmmaker Kevin McMulllin. Surprising at every turn, and overlaid with the palpable weight of a hot summer day, “Low Tide” seemingly represents an exciting new voice and cast of newcomers like Keean Johnson, Alex Neustaedter, Daniel Zolghadri, and Jaeden Martell.

Tribeca BUFFALOED_[GUY_GODFREE]_1_PR_HR_UBG_CMYKBuffaloed
Tribeca loves its alums and in “Buffaloed” it has two, director Tanya Wexler (“Hysteria“) and actress Zoey Deutch (“Flower“). The up-and-coming superstar Deutch stars in this raucous comedy about a young girl obsessed with making enough cash to get out of her blue-collar existence, finding her calling in an ethically debatable industry: debt collecting. The movie co-stars Judy Greer, Jai Courtney, and Jermaine Fowler, and Deutch has proven time and time again that she’s one to watch.

Georgetown
Christoph Waltz makes his directorial debut in a story about is an eccentric and versatile social climber with grandiose plans to affect United States foreign policy. Vanessa Redgrave and Annette Bening co-star alongside Waltz and they form what sounds like an electrifying trio who pull the viewer into this fascinating and layered world. The mystery of the movie hinges on Waltz’s lead character, who is either a misunderstood political genius or a calculating charlatan. Or, possibly, both.

Based on the 2013 Tribeca-winning and Independent Spirit Award-winning documentary of the same name, “The Kill Team” dramatizes the true story an infantryman in Afghanistan who is swept up in a conspiracy of violence against civilians perpetrated by his own platoon. Directed by Dan Krauss (who directed the original “Kill Team”) the movie stars Nat Wolff, Alexander Skarsgård, Adam Long, Jonathan Whitesell, Brian “Sene” Marc and Rob Morrow. Arthouse trainspotters take note: it’s an A24 Films release.

Tribeca DREAMLAND_[URSULA_COYOTE]_3_PR_HR_UBG_CMYK“Dreamland
Directed by Miles Joris-Peyrafitte, “Dreamland” is a period piece drama set amid the dust storms and economic depression of Dustbowl era Oklahoma, where a man finds his family farm on the brink of foreclosure. His last bet to save the farm is the bounty on the head of fugitive bank robber Allison Wells played by Margot Robbie. The movie, which certainly has a “Bonnie And Clyde” look to it, also stars Finn Cole, Travis Fimmel, Kerry Condon, Garrett Hedlund, and Darby Camp.
