Even though Shia LaBeouf has poured cold water on the idea of returning for another “Transfomers” movie and Michael Bay looks likely to finally get to his low budget crime pic “Pain & Gain” next, the future of the franchise is a bit of a question mark right now, but don’t say the word “reboot” to producer Don Murphy.
Little did we know, but he actually has his own message board and the folks over at TFW2005 recently dug up some intriguing recent comments from the surprisingly sour sounding producer. “What happens next? Certainly not a reboot,” Murphy said about the future of the franchise. “We haven’t lost the Transformers. They didn’t grow up or become expensive like Toby Maguire [sic]. I don’t know what happens next. I’m pretty sure there will be a second trilogy. I am pretty sure it will kick ass. And I am pretty sure some of you will hate it because it wasn’t all bots.”
We’re not sure where that random dig at Tobey Maguire is coming from, but Murphy seems bummed at the negative reaction to “Transformers: Dark Of The Moon.” But really, considering the movie already grossed $200 million domestically and has nearly $500 worldwide in a mere eight days, he’s got nothing to complain about. Whether folks like it or not, they are buying tickets in droves and the question now is not “if” there will be another “Transformers” movie but “when.” Another trilogy seems a bit ambitious, but as we just said, no matter how questionable the quality of these films, their popularity is certainly far from waning.
Can LeBeouf be swayed to return? Will Rosie Huntington-Whiteley finally get her own franchise? Which acclaimed actor will next slum it with some CGI robots? All questions that are open for now but if we have one request for a future “Transformers” movie it’s this: can it be under two hours this time? Thanks. [via /Film]

Murphy\’s a miserable so-and-so, but I wouldn\’t describe that as a \”dig\” at Tobey Maguire. Rather, he\’s comparing the trilogy to Spider-Man where Maguire\’s (and Raimi\’s) salaries ballooned to the point that it made financial sense for Marvel/Sony to just reboot. But Murphy\’s point is that they can still use the Transformers and just insert a new cast.
Makes sense. Does anyone really wanna see the origin story again? And the voice cast are presumably cheap. They didn\’t get many big stars.
