Writer-director Dean DeBlois spoke of his intentions to make a trilogy of “How to Train Your Dragon” films even before the release of 2014’s “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” claiming that this second installment introduced characters and scenarios that were meant to lay the groundwork for movie number three. The payoff finally arrives next year with “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” a production that has experienced multiple delays since its initial 2016 slot but promises a definitive conclusion to the fantasy saga, including an explanation for why dragons are no longer present in this world.

Catching up with a grown-up Hiccup and his scaly companion Toothless as they face a new villain voiced by F. Murray Abraham, ‘The Hidden World’ is likely the most anticipated feature that Dreamworks Animation will be bringing us in the next few years, with follow-ups to “Trolls,” “The Croods,” and “The Boss Baby” also scheduled for the studio’s sequel-heavy near future. Check out the official synopsis below:
What began as an unlikely friendship between an adolescent Viking and a fearsome Night Fury dragon has become an epic trilogy spanning their lives. In this next chapter, Hiccup and Toothless will finally discover their true destinies: the village chief as ruler of Berk alongside Astrid, and the dragon as leader of his own kind. As both ascend, the darkest threat they’ve yet faced—as well as the appearance of a female Night Fury—will test the bonds of their relationship like never before.
The film stars Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchett, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Kit Harington, Kristen Wiig, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and F. Murray Abraham. It will be the first Dreamworks Animation release to be distributed by Universal Pictures after the studio was acquired by NBCUniversal.
“How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” is slated for release on March 1st, 2019.
