“Equalizer 3” sees star Denzel Washington and filmmaker Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day“) reunite as Washington’s character Robert McCall, an ex-Marine and D.I.A. Officer, is situated in Boston doing random blue collar jobs to keep under the radar while also being the go-to person for locals in his small orbit to help with dealing with dangerous people when they can’t go to the authorities. One of the big antagonists from the first movie was the Russian mob with Marton Csokas in the role of gangster Nicolai Itchenko. The newest incarnation sees McCall’s services required in Rome, Italy dealing with the infamous mafia in Southern Italy.
It’s also another mini-reunion with Washington working alongside his “Man On Fire” co-star Dakota Fanning (“Once Upon A Time In Hollywood“). Others on the call-sheet include David Denman (“13 Hours“) and Italian actress Gaia Scodellaro, who is part of a large local cast assembled for the film.
Here is a logline for the pic:
Robert McCall finds himself at home in Southern Italy but he discovers his friends are under the control of local crime bosses. As events turn deadly, McCall knows what he has to do: become his friends’ protector by taking on the mafia.
The franchise is loosely based on the 1985 CBS series of the same name that starred British actor Edward Woodward and interestingly enough there is a modern incarnation currently on the network starring Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall that debuted back in 2021. Screenwriter Richard Wenk (“Kraven The Hunter”) is behind the sequel’s script and it was shot by three-time Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Richardson (“The Hateful Eight“), who previously worked on Fuqua’s drama “Emancipation.”
Sony is set to release “Equalizer 3” on September 1 and is being promoted as the “final chapter.” You can watch that aforementioned trailer below alongside an official poster for the action pic.
