It was somewhat underseen, but as indie relationship comedy-dramas about twentysomethings go (and it's not like there's a lack of them), 2009's "Breaking Upwards" was one of the better ones. Written by and starring Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones and directed by Wein, it followed a young couple who decide to ease into a break-up by entering an open relationship — one day together, one day apart. It had its share of whimsy, as well as two very appealing leads, and an unusual rawness to its emotion that meant it lingered longer in the mind than some of its competition.
While it didn't make much impact at the time, it made enough of a stir to get the pair some studio attention, and this summer will see their follow-up, "Lola Versus," hit theaters via Fox Searchlight, and it'll provide the biggest vehicle yet for two rising stars, indie favorite Greta Gerwig and "The Killing" star Joel Kinnaman, who's soon to take over the mask of "RoboCop." The film will premiere at Tribeca Film Festival in a few short weeks, but before then, a poster's arrived via Vulture, which you can look at below, as well as the brand new trailer.
In the film, Gerwig plays the title character, who's dumped by her rock star boyfriend (Kinnaman) just before their wedding, and she sets out to come to terms with turning 30. It's not a wildly original premise — and the movie goes through some familiar beats — but Gerwig's charm definitely goes a long way. The film will bow at the Tribeca on April 24th, before Fox Searchlight (who are keen to milk their connection to previous summer indie rom-com hit "(500) Days of Summer," naming it prominently on the poster) release the film on June 8th. (And oh yeah, that song at the beginning of the trailer is "Go Outside" by Cults).
Funny a studio's function is bringing bunch of whatever if or not flicks so what's the connection of this film with (500) Days of Summer. Interesting to watch the Swedish yummy in such genre kinda rare for himself. Was quite motivated to watch Breaking Upwards, so nice to hear about it from this post.
For some reason I am mesmerized by her fake hair. I am weirded out by it. Maybe y'all shouldn't advertise "Damsels in Distress" with her bob and then have this stuff with her long wavy beach hair. It makes me want to get fake hair. Yeah you can tell this is a chick flick.
