“Cadillac Records,” the film that charts the rise and fall of seminal R&B label, Chess Records, starring Beyoncé Knowles, Mos Def and Jeffery Wright, and Adrien Brody (as Etta James, Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters and R&B magnate Leonard Chess, respectively) has itself a trailer.
“Cadillac Records” comes out December 5 and is likely hoping to be this years, “Dreamgirls,” but Oscar talk so far is non-existent. Then again, it got added to the 2008 slate pretty late.
That said, Oscar talk is generally semi-informed (people who have seen the films already or are close to people who have) and there is zero talk. Still, might be a decent music biopic. As Pop & Hiss notes, the trailer features Beyoncé’s take on James’ “At Last,” and also offers a quick glimpse at some young actors playing nubile Rolling Stones.
BTW: Terrance Blanchard, Spike Lee’s regular music man, is the film’s score composer.
i thought Notorious was this years Dreamgirls?
Notorious comes out in 2009 and isn’t released in Oscar season like Dreamgirls and Cadillac Records.
More importantly: does this year need a new “Dreamgirls”?
Well the answer to that lies in Dreamgirls itself which was terrible so no.
My sorta point is, can a fluffy music-based film penetrate the Oscars like that one did?
Likely not.
