Got a Tip?

Trailer Alert: ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’

It’s about damn time! The trailer for Wes Anderson‘s animated adaptation of Roald Dahl‘s children’s book “Fantastic Mr. Fox” has finally been released online.

We’re not exactly sure what to make of it. It looks cute and offers a few light chuckles, but we’re not sure if this trailer was made for the Wes Anderson fans or for the people that plan on seeing “Aliens in the Attic” this Friday. George Clooney‘s ‘Fox’ voice sounds more smooth Danny Ocean and less like that of a father/husband. In fact, many of the voices sound relatively phoned in. Bill Murray sounds bored as does Owen Wilson, whose cameo was advertised in the trailer.

On the other hand, both Meryl Streep and Jason Schwartzman seem like good fits for their characters and Willem Dafoe is perfect as the rat. The overall aesthetic lacks depth and looks like an animated version of one of Max Fischer’s stageplays. We’ll end up seeing it, but our expectations aren’t too high. Then again, this is supposed to be a children’s movie, right?
Songs in the trailer include but are not limited to “Peter Gunn Theme” and “Lookin’ For A Fox”.

  1. I don't get phoned in from any of the voices. Dialed back maybe, but that's a good thing.

    I can't wait.

By the way, you're the soundtrack guys…was there ever any more news about Jarvis Cocker contributing to the soundtrack? He talked about it a year ago and I haven't heard anything more about it.

  2. It's unclear how many songs of Jarvis made the final cut. He said he recorded 3-4 songs and friends of ours who have seen it said they heard a few songs, but that info isn't out there yet and most of us haven't seen it yet.

His narration was already cut out of the film, so it's conceivable that not all the music he wrote will make it to the film, but that's purely speculation.

  3. That homemade look is completely intentional. I think the trailer rocks. Clooney's voice is a tad iffy–not sure if it fits with the style–but I'm betting I'll forget about it 10 minutes in.

  4. i agree with phoned-in delivery and the animation just looks too choppy and weird. intentional perhaps, but kids these day (the intended audience…. maybe?) are going to just look at that and think it's antiquated. A lot of people are really lukewarm on this and i can't say I'm surprised.

  5. I'm loving every second of the trailer and I agree with knives, I think it's an intentional throwback kind of stop-motion look… I think its amazing that even though the film is stop motion is still looks like a wes anderson flick, anyone who doesn't believe in auteur theory need only rent his oeuvre. Fantastic!
