It feels like a while since we’ve had a really good post-modern-ish teen horror-comedy — many have imitated “Scream” over the years, but few have done it successfully. But that gap in the market means that we’re pretty excited about “Tragedy Girls,” which looks to blend Wes Craven with “Heathers” for the social media era.
Directed by first-timer Tyler MacIntyre (who’s since set up a follow-up at Sony), it stars X-Men universe refugees Alexandra Shipp (Storm in “X-Men: Apocalypse”) and Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead in “Deadpool”) as a pair of bloggers who decide to imitate a local serial killer and become slashers themselves in a bid to boost their follower count and fame.
Also starring Josh Hutcherson, Craig Robinson, Kevin Durand and “Logan Lucky” actor Jack Quaid, the film was a hit when it premiered at SXSW, we’ve heard good things about it ever since, and certainly looks like fun from the new trailer, which distributors Gunpowder & Sky just dropped this afternoon.
Could it be the snarky, bloody, high school murderfest that genre fans have been waiting for? “Tragedy Girls” opens on October 20th, just in time for Halloween, so you’ll be able to find out then. In the meantime, watch the trailer below, along with the official synopsis for the movie.
Best friends Sadie and McKayla are on a mission to boost their social media fandom as amateur crime reporters hot on the trail of a deranged local serial killer. Will their accounts get verified?
