Nicholas Hoult And Miles Teller Up For Pivotal Role In Tom Cruise’s ‘Top Gun 2’

After what seems like decades of rumors, “Top Gun 2” is not only a reality, but it’s also actually in production right now. The Tom Cruise ‘80s classic is getting an update, and it looks like there’s going to be plenty of nostalgia to go around. Val Kilmer has already been announced as co-starring with Cruise, but according to a new report, it appears the film has an interesting plan to deal with Goose’s death.

THR is reporting that producers are now deciding who will take the role of the son of the dearly departed Cruise wingman. The names up for the role are Nicholas Hoult, Glen Powell, and Miles Teller. One could assume that whoever takes over the role will be placed right at the center of the film, for any potential spin-offs or sequels. And for those that don’t remember the original “Top Gun,” Goose is the wingman of Tom Cruise’s Maverick and died an untimely death while flying with his best friend.

Any one of those three actors would be welcome additions to the franchise. Obviously, Miles Teller has the most star power, as he’s starred in films like “Whiplash” and “Only the Brave.” Hoult is no slouch either. The young actor has been a fixture in the “X-Men” franchise, as well as a scene-stealing performance in “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

Powell is a bit of an unknown. He currently is celebrating the release of the newest Netflix rom-com “Set It Up” and was previously featured in “Hidden Figures.”

Any way the producers decide to go, there’s a lot riding on this new sequel. The original film was a big hit for director Tony Scott, but it’s a whole new filmmaker at the helm and it’s been 30 years since the first film was released. Director Joseph Kosinski, who has directed Cruise in the forgotten sci-fi bomb “Oblivion” and was responsible for “Tron: Legacy.”

“Top Gun 2” will be released on July 12, 2019.
