Got a Tip?

Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo & Naomi Ackie Join Robert Pattinson For Bong Joon-Ho’s Next Sci-Fi Film

Ever since “Parasite” won the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2019 and then swept that season’s Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, and more, Hollywood has wondered what Bong Joon-Ho‘s next project would be. Well, things are beginning to take shape as Warner Bros. announced that more actors have joined Robert Pattinson for the as-yet-untitled new film’s ensemble.

Deadline reports that Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and Naomi Ackie will join Pattinson as part of the cast of Bong’s follow-up to his 2019 smash hit. The film’s still without a title, but the film adapts Edward Ashton‘s upcoming novel “Mickey7,” out soon through St. Martin.

The novel follows Mickey, a disposable employee on a colonial mission to Niflheim’s ice planet. When things get too risky for humans, Mickey steps in and occasionally sacrifices himself, only to regenerate with most of his memories intact. But after six deaths, Mickey permanently expires. Mickey understands the terms of his deal, but will he uphold his end of the bargain? It sounds like Bong’s returning to the sci-fi territory of previous films like “Snowpiercer” and “The Host.”

Bong writes, directs, and produces the film through his production company Offscreen. Joining him are Dooho Choi through Kate Street Picture Company and Plan B‘s Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner. It’s the second team-up between Bong and Plan B after 2017’s “Okja.”

Where can you see Collette, Ruffalo, and Ackie next? Collette has a role in HBO Max‘s limited series “The Staircase,” which just premiered. Ruffalo reprises his role as Bruce Banner in Disney+‘s “She-Hulk: Attorney At Law,” coming this summer. He also stars in Yorgos Lanthimos‘s “Poor Things” alongside Emma Stone this October. And Ackie was handpicked to star in the Whitney Houston biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” sure to be an awards-season favorite at the end of the year.

There’s no point in speculating a release date for Bong’s latest quite yet, but expect it to head into production sometime in 2023.
