Got a Tip?

Tom Holland Says ‘Uncharted’ Starts Filming In A Month But There’s Still No Director Announced

Despite its half a dozen directors that have come and gone, Sony keeps pushing forward with a film adaptation of the “Uncharted” video game series. And yes, Tom Holland is still attached, even though it does seem like Holland might age out of the role by the time production actually begins on the role. Wait a second…”Uncharted” is going to start shooting in a month? That can’t be right…

Well, according to a recent interview with Holland (via IGN), “Uncharted” might not be as bad off as we have been thinking. It appears that the production on the film isn’t just coming soon, but actually in a matter of weeks. The crazy part about that, however, is there’s still no announced director of the film. You read that right. Tom Holland says “Uncharted” is about to begin production…but the film has no director. Allow him to explain.

“If I’m honest, one of my favorite video games ever is the fourth ‘Uncharted’ game… Unbelievable,” said Holland. “And lots of the inspiration from the film has come from that game in particular. It was interesting, when I sat down with [Sony Pictures Chairman] Tom Rothman and we were talking about video games, and I was like ‘Oh, I’ve just finished Uncharted.’ And he was like ‘Well, why don’t you play Nathan Drake?’ I remember being like, ‘I would do anything to play Nathan Drake. Please, that would be amazing.’”

He continued, “So yeah, we start shooting in like four weeks. Mark Wahlberg is going to be amazing as Sully. The stunt department that we have out there in Berlin have done an amazing job already, prepping the stunts, and it’s going to be an exciting one.”

Now, maybe you’re thinking, “Holland has to be mistaken with that timeline. Surely, he can’t be serious?!” Well, in a follow-up comment about the film, the young actor once again reiterates that the production is happening sooner rather than later. Again, with no director being announced. Granted, there are reports that people like Ruben Fleischer have been approached about the gig. But no deal has been announced.

Holland added, “But it’s a pretty awesome movie, and it’s global. We travel the world, we see some amazing places, and Mark Wahlberg and I are going to have a great summer together.”

There are a couple of options here. First, maybe there is a director attached and currently working on the project, but Sony just hasn’t announced it. Sure, okay. The second option is that there isn’t a filmmaker, and the studio is still in a mad dash to find a workman-like filmmaker that can take over a massive blockbuster just weeks before it begins and hopefully turn it into a decent, profitable film.

For Sony’s sake, let’s hope it’s option one. Otherwise? Eesh.
