Got a Tip?

Tom Holland Isn’t Worried About ‘Spider-Man’ Oscar Recognition & Says The Fan Reaction Is “Enough”

When “Spider-Man: No Way Home” debuted to record numbers in theaters a couple of months ago, people started to wonder if the film might have an outside shot at Oscar recognition. No, the superhero film isn’t the best acted, best directed, and most powerful film of 2021. But it sure did inject life into the struggling theatrical industry and show that maybe the theatrical experience isn’t ready to die just yet. That said, according to Tom Holland, he’s not expecting any sort of awards recognition and is just happy the film has resonated with fans.

Speaking to Variety, Tom Holland talked about the awards potential for “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and why he thinks the fan love and support is already enough for him.

“It would be a huge honor for it to be nominated for an Oscar,” said Holland “But I think I can speak on behalf of everyone at Marvel and Sony and particularly [director] Jon Watts, the fan reaction that we’ve received — the love and support — is enough.”

He added, “We have created something that has been such a culturally enriching experience for so many people, that watching those fan reactions to when Andrew [Garfield] comes through and Tobey [Maguire] comes through and Andrew saves Zendaya, I will never be able to live that down. That is just incredible. And for me, to be able to share that with the world is enough.”

Of course, just because “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is the biggest box office success in years doesn’t mean the film is guaranteed to get some Oscars love. Sure, it’s likely to get those noms that often get thrown at Marvel films, for its VFX and sound. But it does really seem like a long shot to get that Best Picture recognition that Sony is so desperate for right now. If any of the “blockbusters” of 2021 get that recognition, it’ll likely be only “Dune” and maybe “No Time to Die.”

That said, as Holland put it, there’s definitely no shame in not getting an Oscar nomination. The film has shattered records and made him one of the most bankable stars in the world. So, even if ‘No Way Home’ doesn’t land a Best Picture nomination, there’s no doubt the film is a massive success.

“Spider-Man: No Way Home” is still dominating the box office and is in theaters now.
