Before Tom Holland put on his Spider-Man tights and began swinging around New York City for Sony/Marvel Studios, the actor was probably best known for his stage work, particularly in the musical “Billy Elliott.” And through various interviews and whatnot, we’ve seen Holland show that he has plenty of dance moves. So, obviously, he’d make a pretty great Fred Astaire. And it appears that’s precisely what’s going to happen.
After being teased in a recent GQ profile, the untitled Fred Astaire biopic is ready to go with Amy Pascal as producer and Tom Holland in the starring role. The actor confirmed this much during a recent interview with the Associated Press during the various red carpet events for the upcoming “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
“I am playing Fred Astaire, yeah. The script came in a week ago,” Holland said. “I haven’t read it yet; they haven’t given it to me.” He added, “I know Amy Pascal has the script. She FaceTimed me earlier. I was in the bath [laughs]. And we had a lovely FaceTime, but I will be playing Fred Astaire.”
Unless you’re someone who has no idea about classic cinema or pop culture history, you are probably at least aware of the name Fred Astaire. The actor/dancer/choreographer/overall performer starred in dozens of musical films and a ton of stage plays. He’s often recognized as one of the most legendary musical performers ever to grace the stage.
Most of the details about Sony’s Fred Astaire biopic are unknown at this time. We know a script is written, though we aren’t sure who wrote it. Presumably, there’s a director attached, though we don’t know who that might be. All we know is that Amy Pascal (who absolutely adores Holland) is teaming up with her ‘Spider-Man’ star to bring the iconic actor’s life to the big screen. And at this point, that’s enough to get us excited.
