Tom Hardy Admits “Critics Hated” The First ‘Venom’ But He Still Read The Reviews: “I Just Like To Know”

The reviews for “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” are finally getting published today. And as of this writing, the film has a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a pretty solid number, even if it’s still early. But the truth is, as we said in our own interview, your mileage may vary on how much you enjoy the sequel based on how much you love/hate the first film. And even Tom Hardy knows that there are plenty of people that dislike the first film.

While talking to USAToday about the new film, “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” Tom Hardy admitted that he wasn’t immune to the negative reviews the first film in the franchise received. He called making the film a “baptism of fire” and was quick to say that he understood that “critics hated it.” But even with all of that, he still thinks it’s important to read the bad reviews along with the good.

“Anybody who says they don’t read reviews … I lean on the side of suspicion,” he explained. ‘I happen to fall in the camp of, I just like to know so maybe I can do something better.”

For context’s sake, we should note that the first “Venom” film has a 30% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is absolutely dreadful. So, at least as of this writing, the sequel seems to be enjoyed a bit more by critics. That said, the fans seem to really love the franchise, as the first film earned more than $850 million worldwide and ‘Carnage’ is expected to be another financial success, as well.

All that to say, maybe Hardy is going to have a bit of an easier time sifting through reviews for “Venom: Let There Be Carnage?” The film arrives in theaters on October 1.
