With today’s release of “The Hangover Part III,” our national nightmare ends and the Wolfpack rides off into the sunset (we hope). Because fans of the “The Hangover” films are also readers of Vanity Fair, director Todd Phillips was interviewed by the magazine and had a few choice words for his critics.
Talking about the origins of the third film, Phillips revealed that he was tempted to “do another wake-up movie.” Why? We’ll let him explain: “The criticisms [of ‘The Hangover Part 2‘] were really about the structure — they didn’t know how this could happen to the same guys twice. ‘Who would ever have a night like that twice?’ So we were like, ‘Oh yeah? It’s going to happen three times. Fuck you.’” Charming.
Obviously the third film doesn’t follow that template — at least not totally — but Phillips does mention that he did manage to sneak in a dig at the critics anyway, “But there is a little bit of a response to the critics at the end of this movie. If you stay through the credits, you’ll see in typical Hangover fashion we have another big credit moment that I think everyone will enjoy.” So there you go folks, stick around after the credits to see Phillips thumb his nose at film critics.
You can catch “The Hangover Part III” — which we were not fans of — complete with its Thanos credits-tease in theaters now.
Todd Phillips is a genius, you guys eat Ricos
Todd Phillips should go back to TAXICAB CONFESSIONS
Phillips in particular is such a whiner. Why even bother addressing the critics? If there's a chorus of people that thought Part II sucked maybe you should self-reflect for a moment and ask why?
I hate it when directors whinge about critics. Any filmmaker worth his salt wouldn't give a damn about what the press think of his work. M. Night Shyamalan, Kevin Smith, and now Todd Phillips. Babies.
