Generally speaking, when we hear something about a new Mark Millar film project, we tend to disregard it: the comic book creator of “Wanted” and “Kick-Ass” has a fluid relationship with the truth, and one too many examples of his untruths (he’s writing “X-Men 4“! “Kick-Ass 2” will film this year!) have come to light for us to pay too much attention to what he’s saying. But his films are undeniably catnip to movie producers, and, so long as the news comes from anyone except Millar himself, we’ll take it as read.
Less than a year after Tony Scott signed to direct Millar’s creation “Nemesis,” Bleeding Cool bring news that his latest opus, the recently-announced Marvel Icons comic “Supercrooks“, co-created with artist Leinil Yu, is on its way to the screen and it’s landed a director. And it’s not one that we’d expected, necessarily — the site reported that Spanish helmer Nacho Vigalondo (“Time Crimes“) is attached to helm the project, and we’ve confirmed with a rep for the director that this is indeed the case.
The book is described as something like a superpowered “Ocean’s 11,” with a group of retired British villains hiding out on the Spanish coast who are brought together for the proverbial one last job. Knowing Millar, there’ll probably be a scene where someone fucks an explosion. The Oscar-nominated Vigalondo (for his short “7.35 In The Morning“) is currently working on his sophomore feature, the Spanish alien-invasion picture “Extraterrestre,” so this will presumably come afterwards, and mark the director’s English-language debut.
There’s no word on where the film is set up: Vigalondo is apparently a huge fan of Millar, so it’s even plausible that he’s personally optioned the material, rather than setting it up at a studio. Either way, we liked “Time Crimes” a lot and look forward to any future work from him. So even if we’re not big fans of Millar, we’re certainly hopeful that this could turn out to be something way better than “Wanted” or “Kick-Ass,” if and when it makes it to screens.
