Two very different kinds of monsters are getting ready to make their debuts in the comind weeks and months — one set to be released, and another a long in the works remake/reboot that is hoping to get it right this time.
First up, Fantasic Fest has announced today that Tim Burton's black-and-white, stop-motion animated "Frankenweenie" will have its world premiere at the festival as the opening film. That's a pretty nice scoop by the organizers, and Walt Disney couldn't really ask for a better place to show off what they hope will be big hit both with genre fans and audiences at large. As you already know, the film is feature length adaptation of Burton's short film, with the story following Victor, who after unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life — with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor's fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new "leash on life" can be monstrous. The 3D film features the voice cast of Catherine O'Hara, Martin Short, Martin Landau, Charlie Tahan, Atticus Shaffer, Robert Capron, Conchata Ferrell and Winona Ryder and all told, it looks very promising.
Next up, remember that "Godzilla" movie "Monsters" director Gareth Edwards was supposed to direct? Yeah, we barely do either. After being announced to helm the project waaaay back in January of 2011, not much has happened since. Last fall, writer Max Borenstein ("The Seventh Son") was hired to tackle the script after David S. Goyer took a first pass, but again, it's pretty much been silence. However, according Latino Review, Legendary Pictures is set to make a big presentation for the film in a few weeks at Comic-Con as part of their big Hall H razzle dazzle. According to the site, what they plan to show will be "SICK!" so uh, yeah, maybe wear a diaper or something. But either way, it looks like his monster is finally ready to move forward in a more significant way, so we'll be staying tuned.
