Got a Tip?

‘Thunderbolts’: ‘The Bear’ Star Ayo Edebiri The Latest To Join The MCU Phase 5 Film’s Stacked Ensemble Cast

Based on its cast alone, “Thunderbolts” may be the buzziest film to come out of the MCU‘s Phase 5. And now the upcoming Marvel movie adds another intriguing name to its ensemble. Variety reports that “The Bear” star Ayo Edebiri is the latest to join the film’s cast, poising the actress for a big-screen breakout.

Edebiri’s addition to an already stacked roster of other MCU characters should turn some heads. But who will Edebiri play? That’s unknown right now, but budget-wise, “Thunderbirds” will be the actress’ biggest film of her career so far. Other upcoming projects for Edebiri beyond “The Bear” Season 2 later this year are two comedies: “Theater Camp,” which just premiered at Sundance, and “Bottoms,” which will debut on Amazon Prime Video. No word on when either will get released.

Marvel head Kevin Feige first announced “Thunderbolts” at Comic-Con last year, and MCU fans have speculated about the movie ever since. The movie sees several Marvel anti-heroes assemble into a mercenary group not too different from the Avengers. The group gets its namesake Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, with Harrison Ford taking over the character from the late William Hurt in next year’s “Captain America: New World Order.”

So who’s part of this squad? A whole bunch of characters adjacent to Captain America: Florence Pugh‘s Yelena Belova, the new Black Widow; David Harbour‘s Red Guardian; Olga Kuryleno‘s Taskmaster; Sebastian Stan‘s Bucky Barnes, The Winter Soldier; Wyat Russell‘s John Walker; and Hannah John-Kamen‘s Ghost from “Ant-Man And The Wasp.”  Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine will lead the group.

But what else do we know about “Thunderbolts” at the moment? Well, according to Louis-Dreyfus, the film starts shooting in June. “Paper Towns” director Jake Schreier helms the movie, shooting a script by “Black Widow” writer Eric Pearson. And, of course, Kevin Feige produces through Marvel Studios.

Marvel’s Phase 5 begins with “Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania” next month. So how will that movie set the stage for MCU films out next year like “Thunderbolts”? Fans don’t have long to wait to find out, with “Quantumania” out February 17. As for Ayo Edibiri, with her “Thunderbolts” casting alongside “The Bear,” expect her career to take off very, very soon.
