“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” dominated the 2018 BAFTA Awards taking home five honors including Best Film, Best British Film, Best Original Screenplay (Martin McDonagh), Best Actress (Frances McDormand) and Best Supporting Actor (Sam Rockwell). In many respects, you would suspect this makes “Three Billboards” the frontrunner to win Best Picture at the Oscars next month except that the Fox Searchlight hit missed out on key indicators such as an Academy Best Director nomination and has won no major guild honors. And, it should be noted, the last three BAFTA Best Film winners, “La La Land,” “Boyhood” and “The Revenant” all missed out at the Academy Awards just a few weeks later.
“The Shape of Water” took three honors including Best Director for Guillermo del Toro, Production Design and Original Music (Alexandre Desplat). All three are presumed frontrunners in the equivalent Oscar categories. “Blade Runner 2049” took two honors including Best Cinematography (Roger Deakins) and Visual Effects. Focus Features’ “Darkest Hour” also won two BAFTA for Best Actor, Gary Oldman, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
Frankly, there were few surprises as McDormand (“Three Billboards”), Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour”), Allison Janney (“I, Tonya”), Rockwell (“Three Billboards”) and James Ivory (“Call Me By Your Name”) took the Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay as expected. Best Original Screenplay delivered a slightly unexpect winner as McDonagh and “Three Billboards” overcame stiff competition from Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird,” Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” and del Toro’s “The Shape of Water.” “Baby Driver” racing by “Dunkirk” and “Shape of Water” was also partially unexpected it the Best Editing field.
The Film Not In The English Language went to Park Chan-wook’s “The Handmaiden.” A well deserved honor, the category only featured one of this year’s Foreign Language Film nominee, “Loveless.” Rungano Nyoni’s “I Am Not A Witch” took Outstanding Debut over presumed winner “Lady Macbeth.” “I Am Not Your Negro,” an Oscar nominee last year, won Best Documentary over “Jane” and “Icarus.” The biggest lock of the night was Animated Feature which went to Pixar’s “Coco.”
Six films with multiple nominees, “Lady Bird,” “Lady Macbeth,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” “The Death of Stalin,” “Paddington 2” and “Get Out” were all shut out.
In a vote determined by the public, Daniel Kaluuya took the EE Rising Star Award.
