Got a Tip?

There Can Only Be Another One: Ryan Reynolds In Talks To Star In ‘Highlander’ Remake

nullOh, dear Ryan Reynolds. For years, people were saying that the actor would be an ideal movie star: handsome, funny, capable of pulling off action roles. And after some false starts, things seemed to be heading his way: he had a massive romantic comedy smash behind him with "The Proposal," and the summer of 2011 would see him headline both superhero flick "Green Lantern" and a promising R-rated comedy, "The Change-Up." Unfortunately, both tanked, and while he co-starred in the modest hit "Safe House" at the start of this year, it's yet to be proven if he's a real, viable A-lister. And we're not sure if the latest project he's taking on is going to change that.

See, Variety report that the actor is Summit Entertainment's first choice to star in their remake of "Highlander," and that Reynolds is interested, with early talks having begun between the two parties. Some might see this as a good thing for the actor's career, but 1) tell that to Christopher Lambert or Adrian Paul's agents, and 2) "Highlander" was (whisper it) pretty bad to begin with, when viewed away from the rosy-tint of '80s VHS nostalgia, and we're not sure a remake is necessarily going to improve on that, particularly with a script originally penned by "Twilight" scribe Melissa Rosenberg, although "Iron Man" scribes Art Marcum and Matt Holloway have since come on board to rewrite.

Still, Reynolds has another shake of the blockbuster dice in 2013 with "R.I.P.D.," which shares a producer with this film in the shape of Neal Moritz, so he could be the biggest megastar in the world by the time "Highlander" makes it into theaters. But honestly, we do like Reynolds despite, you know, most of the films he makes, and we'd really rather he wouldn't take on a project like this. "28 Weeks Later" helmer Juan-Carlos Fresnadillo is directing, and should Reynolds sign on officially, he'll be chopping heads off on screen in 2013 or 2014.

  1. How dare you (whisper it) comment on a film that defined a generation, yes it may not have been a massive blockbuster at the box office, but the cult films rarely do, start trek in its original form was as everyone knows canned very early on its life and now there are millions out there who would admit the films have touched there lives in a positive way. Its my guess the reviewers on this site probably were not even born when the first film came into being and in my opinion are in no position to comment about how good or bad it was, to use one analogy you could say its almost like someone saying to a world war 2 veteran how traumatising the war was when they weren't even there and didn't experience it. So please, in your efforts to make your writing more interesting do you think its possible without slating something you probably know little about?

As for the remake and the Ryan Reynolds issue, I think that a remake is not needed and tarnishes the original in its suggestion that a remake is necessary. Reynolds will not being as charismatic as Lambert was in that role and even when I think of him performing that part all I can think of when Mel Gibson tried to pull off William Wallace in Braveheart, only Gibson would be more convincing.

  2. Most of the films he's made have been pretty good and he's been good in them, but not many people have seen them. They choose to watch dreck like Green Lantern instead, which despite being a "flop" probably grossed more than all of his fine independent and smaller budget films combined.

  3. Okay I'll yell it, HIGHLANDER WAS A GREAT FILM!!! (The sequels not so much) Oh and Tv series was AWESOME! I'm also a fan of Reynolds but I would rather see him make an original film like Deadpool. I wish Hollywood would stop with the remakes and reboots.

  4. Oh god. My mom will love this. She loved all the movies. She has the whole series on VHS. I partially think she married my dad because my dad's part Scottish and from the highlands. Oh god. Last thing I need to see is another "Highlander" movie. I do need to see Ryan Reynolds in a kilt though.
