Every year, there seems to be at least one film that debuts at a film festival, does the festival circuit and earns rave reviews everywhere it goes and is talked about as one of the best films of the year almost from the very first screening. In 2021, that film might be “The Worst Person in the World.”

As seen in the trailer, “The Worst Person in the World” isn’t about some sort of horrible dictator or mass murderer. Instead, it’s about a young woman trying to navigate the trials and tribulations of love in Oslo. Over the course of several years, Julie goes from being a free-spirited woman meeting and romancing various people to settling down with one guy. However, she begins to wonder if she didn’t make a huge mistake by changing her ways.
The film comes from filmmaker Joachim Trier and stars Renate Reinsve. The latter of which has already won awards for her performance, including the Cannes Best Actress honor after the film’s world premiere. “The Worst Person in the World” is clearly one of the best films of 2021 and is finally coming to US theaters this year, so it’ll be one film fans will need to seek out.
“The Worst Person in the World” debuts in select theaters on February 4. You can watch the new trailer below.
Here’s the synopsis:
Director Joachim Trier returns with another modern twist on a classically constructed character portrait of contemporary life in Oslo. Chronicling four years in the life of Julie, THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD examines one woman’s quest for love and meaning in the modern world. Fluidly told in twelve chapters, the film features a breakout performance by Cannes Best Actress winner Renate Reinsve as she explores new professional avenues and embarks on relationships with two very different men (Anders Danielsen Lie and Herbert Nordrum) in her search for happiness and identity.
