Got a Tip?

Vincent Cassel & David Cronenberg Reunite For Supernatural Film ‘The Shrouds’

Another excellent sounding project is heading to the Cannes Market. Canadian director David Cronenberg (“Crime of The Future“) is lining up his next film that will blend science fiction and supernatural elements along with a reunion with French actor Vincent Cassel. The pair previously worked together on the London-set Russian gangster pic “Eastern Promises” and “A Dangerous Method.”

Variety reported the new project, titled “The Shrouds,” will see Cassel playing an innovative businessman and grieving widower who builds a device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud.

Production will begin in March 2023 and could, hypothetically, be ready for a Cannes debut in 2024.

Cronenberg is a master of genre-bending projects, so this material sounds perfectly matched for him. We wouldn’t be terribly shocked if Viggo Mortensen, a longtime muse of the filmmaker going back to “A History of Violence,” joined the project too.

The outlet also provided a logline for “The Shrouds” which reads as follows:

Karsh’s revolutionary business is on the verge of breaking into the international mainstream when several graves within his cemetery are vandalized and nearly destroyed, including that of his wife. While he struggles to uncover a clear motive for the attack, the mystery of who wrought this havoc, and why, will drive Karsh to reevaluate his business, marriage and fidelity to his late wife’s memory, as well as push him to new beginnings.

SBS Productions, Prospero Pictures, and Michel Merkt will produce the new picture as CAA Media Finance and FilmNation Entertainment are handling sales.

Cronenberg’s futuristic body horror movie “Crimes of The Future” will premiere this month at the Cannes Film Festival and it releases domestically on June 8. We’re just beyond tickled that Cronenberg is grinding out high-profile genre projects back-to-back and how quickly things are coming together with “The Shrouds” is very promising.
