Director Justin Lin and Universal are responsible for the latest run of “Fast & Furious” movies, with the filmmaker helping to evolve and keep the franchise on track over the years. “Fast 10” is on the horizon and recent additions Jason Momoa and Daniela Melchior are taking key roles. Lin and Universal are reuniting for a new television project that might skew more serious than Lin’s usual popcorn flicks.
Deadline has revealed that Lin is involved with a new original crime drama series for Peacock, Universal’s streaming service, and it will see Oscar-nominated actor Steven Yuen (“Minari,” “The Walking Dead“) produce via Universal Remote.
Sadly, the report states that Yuen won’t star in the show, but he will be seen next in Jordan Peele‘s latest genre pic “NOPE.”
Inspired by true events, the show titled “The Islands” is set in Hawaii during the 1960s and comes from writers Kaz and Ryan Firpo. The sibling writing duo is best known for working alongside Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao on Marvel‘s “Eternals,” and is behind the Paramount stoner comedy “The Aliens Are Stealing Our Weed” that will star Gina Rodrigez (“Annihilation“). They’re also working on the Netflix movie “Prodigy” based on the Mark Millar comic book.
In-depth plot details aren’t mentioned but “The Islands” is described as follows by the outlet:
“About American Imperialism, the fall of a kingdom, and the changing of a way of life.”
This isn’t Lin’s first entry into the world of television. His other credits include HBO Max‘s “Warrior,” “Scorpion,” “S.W.A.T.,” and the Hawaiian-set “Magnum P.I.” revival.
