Some cult classics are so beloved, so perfect; a remake arguably shouldn’t even be attempted. But that’s apparently the case with Tony Scott’s 1983 sensualist horror-romance classic “The Hunger” starring David Bowie, Susan Sarandon, and Catherine DeNeuve. According to Deadline, Warner Bros. is slated to remake the picture. Currently, filmmaker Angela Robinson (“Professor Marston & the Wonder Women,” “D.E.B.S.“) is in talks to take the helm as director, and Jessica Sharzer, known for the indie “Speak” and “American Horror Story,” will write the screenplay. The film will presumably be adapted from Scott’s picture and Whitley Strieber’s 1981 novel of the same title.
The film follows Miriam and John Blaylock, the last of their endangered vampire species. In an effort to retain their immortality, they develop a steamy and complicated love triangle with a scientist who is tasked to research the peculiar nature of the vampires’ aging.
Tony Scott’s original cult hit and its singular cast may prove difficult to replicate. There is no casting news for Warner Bros’ “The Hunger” available as of yet.
Since the film’s initial release, Scott’s “The Hunger” has garnished cult reception for its distinct tone, atmosphere, and sex appeal. “The Hunger” was Tony Scott’s feature directorial debut. Three years later, he directed Tom Cruise in “Top Gun,” and the rest is history.
Based on her previous efforts, it seems Angela Robinson is well-equipped to handle female-forward, provocative subject matter. Specifically, her 2017 outing “Professor Marston & the Wonder Women” was a particularly sensualist, empathetic, and erotic telling of the origins of the Wonder Woman character. Robinson also knows her vampires and sapphic romance; she was a director and executive producer on HBO’s “True Blood” and “The L Word.” Jessica Sharzer boasts her fair share of relevant credits, including teleplay work on “American Horror Story” as well as her delicious adapted screenplay for the Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively vehicle “A Simple Favor.”
“The Hunger” will be produced by Greg Berlanti and Sarag Schechter of Berlanti Schechter Productions. Mike McGrath will serve as executive producer. Warner Bros. will oversee.
