“The Green Knight” is director David Lowery‘s latest entry into the fantasy genre tackling the late 14th-century Arthurian tale “Sir Gawain & The Green Knight.” And the mature visual stunner from A24 is easily one of the most anticipated upcoming releases in 2021.
David Lowery Says Canceled 2020 SXSW Allowed Him To Fully Recut ‘The Green Knight’
Sadly, because of the rising cases of COVID in the United Kingdom, Deadline reports that the U.K. release of the film has been pulled without a new date named. However, the U.S. release date is sticking to July 30 as planned (for the moment). While Delta Variant is rising in the U.S., from all reports the U.K. is a total precarious mess all over, hence the film being pulled from theaters.
We’re sure a new U.K, release date is coming in the near future, but the Boris Johnson-led government across the pond, really has to figure its shit out, what with all the poorly-timed early reopenings, and then lockdowns in a repeat pattern that is starting to feel like an unintentional absurdist comedy.
12 Films To Watch in July: ‘No Sudden Move,’ ‘The Green Knight’ & More
Here is the official synopsis from A24:
Watch: Legends Never Die: An Oral History Of ‘The Green Knight’ Narrated by Ralph Ineson
“An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger. From visionary filmmaker David Lowery comes a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from the knights of the round table.”

The cast consists of Dev Patel (“Slumdog Millionaire,” “Lion”), Alicia Vikander (“Ex Machina,” “Tomb Raider,” “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.”), Joel Edgerton (“Warrior,” “Animal Kingdom,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi“), Sarita Choudhury (“A Hologram For The King“), Sean Harris (“Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation,” “Prometheus“), Kate Dickie (“The Witch,” “Game of Thrones,” “Prometheus”), Barry Keoghan (“Chernobyl,” “Eternals,” “The Batman“), Erin Kellyman (“Willow,” “The Falcon & The Winter Soldier,” “Solo: A Star Wars Story“), and Ralph Ineson (“Game of Thrones,” “The Witch,” “Gunpowder Milkshake“).
The Aurthian tale shares some linage to the Middle-Earth franchise as J.R.R. Tolkien’s version of the mythical “Green Knight” story was published in 1975 (two years after his death) and Peter Jackson‘s effects house Weta Digital was involved with the film’s visual effects.
Hopefully, A24 and Lowery will reunite for a string of these mature fantasy movies as there are plenty of stories from the King Arthur legends to mine for subsequent installments. The filmmaker recently wrapped on the Disney movie “Peter Pan & Wendy” and is expected to release sometime in 2022.
