‘The Goon’: Tim Miller Reveals Animated Comic Book Film He’s Producing With David Fincher Heading To Netflix [Comic-Con]

The creative relationship between directors Tim Miller (“Deadpool”) and David Fincher goes back over a decade. The two first partnered to revive the 1980s anthology genre film “Heavy Metal,” with that project eventually evolving into the acclaimed “Love, Death + Robots.” The duo even attempted a comic book adaptation with “The Goon.” An animated film based on the Eric Powell comic book that was published by Dark Horse Comics that has been sitting in development hell for ages, despite word back in 2019 that 20th Century Studios was picking it up

During Collider’s “Directors On Directing” panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, Miller revealed that the comic book project has risen from its grave and has landed at Netflix, the current home of “Love, Death + Robots.” Powell is working on the script with Patrick Osborne (“Love, Death + Robots”) with Osborne also set to direct the animated pic.

If you’re unfamiliar with Powell’s genre-bending satirical comic book here is a breakdown:

The series mixes both a comical and violent atmosphere with a supernatural slant, which pit the titular character against undead creatures/zombies, ghosts, ghouls, mutants, skunk-apes with an unnatural hunger for pies, giant squids, mob/gang leaders, extra-dimensional aliens, mad scientists, and robots.

It originally had actors Paul Giamatti (“Billions”) and Clancy Brown (“Highlander”) in the main voice-over roles and even test footage made its way online (See below). Although, the two haven’t been confirmed for this latest incarnation at Netflix.

Miller is also a producer on the popular and financially successful “Sonic The Hedgehog” films as director Jeff Fowler, cut his teeth working on shorts for Miller at his animation studio, Blur. So, it’s easy to see why the animation side might be taking off with Blur’s recent successes.
