For those of us who pay attention to the Oscar nominations each year, it was a surprise to see the contender picked by Spain for the International Film race. While everyone expected them to select “Parallel Mothers” starring Penelope Cruz, they instead went with “The Good Boss” starring Javier Bardem, Cruz’s husband. Ultimately, the film did not receive a nomination but did make the shortlist. It just shows how much confidence people have in the quality of “The Good Boss.”

“The Good Boss” is a comedy directed by Fernando León de Aranoa, whom Bardem has worked with before. It stars Bardem as Blanco, a proprietor of a Spanish company that produces industrial scales. He and his colleagues are facing an imminent visit from a committee that will decide if they merit a local Business Excellence award, which means everything has to be perfect. With this visit looming and the award on the line, Blanco finds himself pulling out all the stops to resolve any issues with his employees, which has him crossing every line imaginable.
Having originally premiered at the 2021 San Sebastian Film Festival to positive reviews, the film seems to be a satire on the sleazy bosses, corporate corruption, and capitalism that we know all too well. Starring alongside Bardem is Óscar de la Fuente, Manolo Solo, and Almudena Amor.
