Got a Tip?

‘The Girl In The Spider’s Web’ Officially In The Works, But David Fincher, Rooney Mara And Daniel Craig Will Not Be Returning

Sony has for some time been considering whether or not to make the sequel to David Fincher‘s gritty and electric “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.” The decidedly hard-R thriller was expensive, and for all the marketing push didn’t quite do the numbers the studio was hoping for. So it has recently become evident that Sony were contemplating bringing back Lisbeth Salander, but not David Fincher. Earlier this year, it was reported that the studio was considering combining “The Girl Who Played With Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest” into one movie without Fincher. But it seems they have a different plan, —namely, a reboot.

THR reports that Sony is moving ahead with a big screen adaptation of the officially sanctioned, non-Stieg Larsson penned “The Girl in the Spider’s Web.” Steven Knight (“Locke,” “Burnt,” “Eastern Promises“) has been tapped to write the screenplay, but here’s the kicker: neither Rooney Mara nor Daniel Craig are expected to reprise their roles, nor is Fincher expected to direct.

Sony famously fought with Fincher over the casting of Mara and over the film in general, as the director put his foot down on almost every aspect of the release, including the marketing. So perhaps it’s not a surprise that the studio wants to kickstart the franchise again without his involvement. However, it is interesting to see that Scott Rudin and Amy Pascal are both back to produce. I suppose they’ve put aside the differences that flared between during the “Steve Jobs” fiasco at Sony, when the project fell apart after Fincher and the studio couldn’t come to terms with his demands, including a $10 million dollar salary, to helm the picture.

  1. Well, Fincher don\’t need that. We left by the great door. Craig and Mara also did it. It\’s a shame we can\’t watch the real trilogy with these three totems. But, sincerely, it\’s been a long time gap. Maybe it will be a fiasco such as Sin City: A Dame To Kill For (Nine year to do a sequel? Give me a break!) Most people forget, and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo like for fans, not everybody. The Swedish films are good. The american version of first book too, every in his own style. Since adapt the David Lagercrantz\’s book is a bold move (surely a big lost of money) because he isn\’t Larsson. I haven\’t read it but I\’m not interested. Larsson is Larsson. Period.

  2. So, instead of bringing back the crew who made a worthy American version of the first book, Sony has decided to nix everyone involved and adapt the one book in the series not written by the author. Brilliantly stupid move for a studio that\’s already lost their Spidey franchise to a similar decision. Some folks never learn….
