‘The Foundation’: Todd Field Expands The ‘TÁR’ Cinematic Universe With A New Short Set To Premiere At The Berlinale In February

Todd Field returned to filmmaking in a big way this year with “TÁR,” his first movie in 16 years. And both critics and audiences loved the film, with it being one of the Fall’s most anticipated theatrical releases after its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September. Now it appears Field isn’t ready to leave Cate Blanchett‘s Lydia Tár behind. According to the Berlin Film Festival, buried in their most recent update, Field has a new short with the character set to premiere at the Berlinale in February titled “The Foundation.”

No details on the short’s length or its plot, but the “TÁR” cast and crew will be at the Berlinale screening, so expect “The Foundation” to be more than just a deleted scene from the original film. Also, no surprise that the short gets its premiere in Berlin. Field partially shot “TÁR” and “The Foundation” in Germany’s capital.

“Showing TÁR in Berlin for a special screening was a natural choice,” said Berlinale Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian in a press statement. “In a cinematic way, the acclaimed work of Todd Field and his actors has captured the special flair of this city. We are very happy that Todd Field along with Cate Blanchett, Nina Hoss, and composer Hildur Guðnadóttir have accepted our proposal to share some of the secrets of their work in a public talk at Berlinale Talents. We are also delighted to be premiering a new short that expands the “TÁR” universe, “The Fundraiser,” that will screen alongside their talk.”

So, there you have it: “The Foundation” expands Todd Field’s TCU, or, TÁR Cinematic Universe after he already did so with a music video earlier this year. Jokes aside, a companion short to one of 2022’s most intelligent films is a big deal. And with “TÁR” being on so many top 10 lists for best films of the year, expect anticipation for “The Foundation” to be super-high at the Berlinale. More news on this Todd Field short soon.
