Got a Tip?

‘The Canyons’ Soundtrack Features Dum Dum Girls, Place To Bury Strangers & Score By Brendan Canning

The Canyons, trailer, LohanWhile Steven Soderbergh’s assertion that “The Canyons” has “a spectacular sex scene” has been one of many tantalizing teases for the movie, audiences clamoring to see Lindsay Lohan in the Paul Schrader-directed, Brett Easton Ellis-penned film waiting to see for themselves how it all turns out. The film has been greeted by all kinds of mini-scandals and buzz, and it’s been something the trailers and photos are hoping to capitalize off of, and audiences are only a couple weeks away from seeing the finished product.

And while verdict awaits for the movie, the soundtrack – to be released digitally at the end of July – sounds like a tribute to Cliff Martinez’s “Drive” score. The predominant songs on the soundtrack are by Broken Social Scene member Brendan Canning alongside group Me&John; “The Canyons Theme” and “Without the Night” have an airy, psychedelic beat that sets the tone for this languid story of sex and murder. The only outside bands are Gold Zebra, A Place to Bury Strangers and Dum Dum Girls whose sounds are a mix of hard rock and club music that probably have a deeper connection within the context of the story. No matter how the movie turns out, the soundtrack for “The Canyons” is something worth putting on your iPod.

  1. The soundtrack is amazing; however, A Place to Bury Strangers, Gold Zebra, and especially Dum Dum Girls are far from "hard rock" or "club music". Was this written by someone who listens exclusively to Top 40s?

  2. Even if the final product sucks, the soundtrack is great, maybe it'll be one of those movies where the music passes the time test while the film gets forgotten?
