‘The Burning Sea’ Trailer: Smoke On The Water In New Norwegian Disaster Thriller From ‘The Quake’ Team

In an age of ever-increasing eco-anxiety, the disaster thriller is more vital than ever. Besides the apocalyptic cataclysmia witnessed in superhero movies seemingly every other month, Adam McKay’s buzzy Netflix satire “Don’t Look Up” is a hit with streaming audiences even as it was lambasted by critics. Meanwhile, “Moonfall,” the latest effort from disaster genre veteran Roland Emmerich, drops later this week. But none of those examples have taken as realistic a tack as “The Burning Sea,” the upcoming Norwegian thriller from the creative team behind 2015’s “The Wave” and its 2018 follow-up “The Quake.” Both those films were praised for their grounded approach and believable special effects, a winning formula that “The Burning Sea” seems to replicate.

Here’s the official synopsis:

“1969, the Norwegian government announces their discovery of one of the world’s largest oil fields in the neighboring North Sea, launching a prosperous period of offshore drilling. 50 years later, the environmental consequences begin to manifest – a crack has opened on the ocean floor, causing a rig to collapse. A team of researchers, including submarine operator Sofia, rushes in to search for the missing and assess the cause of the damage, but what they discover is that this is just the start of a possible apocalyptic catastrophe. As rigs are evacuated, Sofia’s loving companion Stian becomes trapped in the depths of the sea, and Sofia must dive in to rescue him.

“The Quake” director John Andreas Andersen returns along with screenwriter Harald Rosenløw-Eeg, this time working in collaboration with Lars Gudmestad. The film stars Kristine Kujath Thorp (“Ninjababy”), Rolf Kristian Larsen (“The Man Who Loved Yngve”), Anders Baasmo (“Kon-Tiki,”), Bjørn Floberg (“Kingsman: The Secret Service”), and Anneke von der Lippe (“Pan”).

“The Burning Sea” will premiere in theaters and on-demand on February 25.
