While Tom Hardy made his biggest impression on North American audiences with his dashing, charming turn in Christopher Nolan's "Inception" (with that persona used to far lesser effect in "This Means War"), this summer he's offering up two roles which find him brooding behind a mask, and under a hat. The first, of course, is as the hulk-tacular Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises," where even with his face obscured, he commands considerable terror. And in just about a month, he's back at the multiplex as the monosyllabic (but also quite hilarious) Forrest Bondurant in John Hillcoat's "Lawless."
In the film he plays the head of a moonshine-running trio of brothers who find their little empire threatened by the arrival of Special Agent Charlie Rakes (Guy Pearce), a man whose means are as vicious as the finely honed cuts of the suits he wears. Six new images from the film have arrived, with some rootin', tootin' guns being brandished about. But don't worry, while the image might suggest he's some kind of rock 'n roll bootlegger, Shia LaBeouf does not spend the movie brandishing his weapons. In fact, it's quite odd how much emphasis The Weinstein Company seem to be putting on the guns in the movie (see poster here) when so much of the story is about the courage required to truly use violence as a means of justice. Whatever.
"Lawless" serves up it up cold on August 29th. [HeyUGuys]
