“The Addams Family” is a franchise that has stuck around for decades. Filled with iconic characters and a theme song that almost anyone on Earth can snap along to, the idea of bringing “The Addams Family” to the big screen as an animated feature is a no-brainer. But yet, you watch the new trailer and you have to wonder what the hell people were thinking when they wrote this script.
To be fair, we knew that something was amiss with “The Addams Family” when the recent posters were released. Each poster featured a carefully crafted design for each character in the film followed by one of the most poorly-chosen, and incredibly dated, taglines, including “Talk to the Hand,” “Straight Outta Coffin,” and “You Got Served,” just to name a few. Oof.

Now, the trailer arrives with jokes filled with even more dated references and songs, terribly unfunny jokes, and an “It: Chapter One” joke thrown in for good measure. That doesn’t even take into account the fish-out-of-water premise that has been used a million times, and already done before in this franchise with the live-action films. It’s just unbelievably bad.
The fact that this film stars an all-star cast makes “The Addams Family” even more perplexing. That cast includes Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloë Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard, Nick Kroll, Snoop Dogg, Bette Midler, Allison Janney, Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara, Tituss Burgess, Jenifer Lewis, and Elsie Fisher. That’s a mixture of incredible dramatic talent, including multiple Oscar winners, as well as some of the funniest people around. Yet this film feels…terribly unfunny.
“The Addams Family” arrives in theaters on October 11.
