Yes, “The Lego Movie” might be super-clever and subversive and far better than anyone was expecting, but that’s not how Hollywood sees it. As we feared, the success of the toy movie has sent executives scrambling to find anything that can be found on the shelves of Toys ‘R Us so they can turn it into a movie. And that’s why “Monster Trucks” is a totally a thing now.
First announced last summer, the live action/animated hybrid will be directed by Chris Wedge (“Ice Age,” “Epic“) with Paramount aiming for “a ‘Transformers‘-like franchise,” because obviously. And now The Wrap reveals that “Suburgatory” and “Evil Dead” star Jane Levy will lead the film alongside Havok aka Lucas Till. Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger (“Kung Fu Panda,” “Alvin And The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked“) have penned the script for this thing, though no plot details have been revealed yet (though we presume it involves lots of trucks crushing and smashing stuff).
As for the characters, Till will play the completely original “bad boy with a good heart” while Levy is Tina Fey-esque high school girl (so, wisecracking and nerdy we guess). And presumably they’ll fall for each other as trucks go smashy-smash around them.
Production on “Monster Trucks” is slated to begin this summer and it will roll into theaters on May 29, 2015.
