Got a Tip?

Terrence Malick’s WWII Drama ‘Radegund’ Not Expected To Arrive Until 2018

It’s been a busy year the normally patient Terrence Malick, with the director releasing “Knight Of Cups,” two versions of his documentary “Voyage Of Time” (the IMAX cut hit cinemas, while the theatrical version has only done the fest circuit, but arrives next year for multiplex moviegoers). And that’s not to mention, he spent the summer and early fall filming his next movie, the WWII drama “Radegund.” However, that film is still quite a way off.

In a profile of producer Philip Lee in THR, who is one of the backers of Malick’s upcoming film, it’s revealed that “Radegund” is “slated for a 2018 release.” A bummer, but not a big surprise.

Featuring a cast that includes “Inglourious Basterds” actor August Diehl, newcomer Valerie PachnerBruno Ganz, Matthias Schoenaerts and Jürgen Prochnow (though the editing process could see some of the latter names cut), the drama follows Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian man who opposed the Nazis, refused to fight as a conscientious objector and was executed in 1943. It sounds like Malick’s most straightforward movie in quite some time, but he’s got something else to get out of the way first.

Next year we’ll hopefully, finally see “Weightless,” the movie starring/featuring (provided no one gets cut) Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Haley Bennett, Natalie Portman, Michael Fassbender, Val Kilmer, Benicio Del Toro, Clifton Collins Jr., Angela Bettis, Bérénice Marlohe, Florence Welch, and Holly Hunter and a bunch of bands that first started production way back in 2011. While nothing is certain with Malick, I’ll assume we’ll get his movie, set around intersecting relationships in the Austin music scene, sometime in 2017.

There was a certain point in his career where the idea of waiting for two new Terrence Malick movies to be released would’ve seemed laughable, but these days, it’s essentially par for the course. And we’re certainly not complaining about that.
