Got a Tip?

‘Boardwalk Empire’ Creator Terence Winter Writing New True Crime Series About Corrupt Detectives

If you were hoping to develop a crime drama series based on corrupt cops in New York City, you would be hard-pressed to find a better writer to tell the story than Terence Winter. And apparently, that’s exactly why he’s attached to an upcoming drama series produced by Asterlight about two NYPD detectives playing both sides of the law.

According to Deadline, Winter is working on a new series based on the true crime story that is chronicled in the book, “Friends of the Family: The Inside Story of the Mafia Cops Case.” The story follows two celebrated NYPD detectives, Stephen Caracappa and Louis Eppolito, who also secretly worked for the Lucchese and Gambino crime families and committed numerous crimes including racketeering, bribery, kidnapping, and murder.

As mentioned, Winter is a veteran TV writer and producer, probably best known for his work on the acclaimed HBO series, “Boardwalk Empire.” He’s also written for series such as “The Sopranos” and “Vinyl,” as well as earning an Oscar nomination for his work on the film, “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Most recently, he’s been named as a writer for the upcoming ‘Batman’-inspired TV series that is being developed alongside Matt Reeves for HBO Max. That series will focus on the Gotham PD and, once again, put Winter in the role of writing about crime and corruption, his bread and butter.

“Caracappa and Eppolito disgraced their badges like no one else in NYPD history,” said Winter. “It’s a privilege to tell the story of Tommy Dades, Mike Vecchione, and Joe Ponzi – the good guys who brought them to justice.”

It’s unclear where the series might land or when it might go into production. But with Winter’s pedigree with incredible TV projects, we have to imagine it won’t be long before someone picks up the series and works to bring it to TV screens.
