“Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy”
Directed by Nancy Buirski, “Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy” is not a documentary about the making of “Midnight Cowboy” but rather the story of the people who made it. The film, which is the only X-rated film to win an Academy Award for Best Picture, remains one of the most groundbreaking films. Buirski looks at why this movie held such a moment and is still so relevant fifty years later. ‘Desperate Souls’ features Bob Balaban, Ian Buruma, Michael Childers, Brian De Palma, James Hoberman, Adam Holender, Charles Kaiser, Jennifer Salt, Lucy Sante, Brenda Vaccaro, Jon Voight, and Edmund White.
“TÁR”
If Cate Blanchett had said “no” to starring in writer/director Todd Field’s “TÁR,” we would not be writing about it right now. The script was specifically written for Blanchett, and thankfully, now we are able to see the international world of classical music come to life on the big screen. The film centered around the first-ever female chief conductor of a major German orchestra and also stars Julian Glover and Mark Strong.
“Squaring the Circle: The Story of Hipgnosis”
Filmmaker, photographer, and creative director Anton Corbijn’s first feature documentary, “Squaring the Circle: The Story of Hipgnosis,” is premiering at this year’s festival. The film, produced by Colin Firth, Ged Doherty, and Trish D Chetty, gives viewers an inside look at the studio responsible for some of the most iconic and recognizable album covers of all time. From Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon to Led Zeppelin’s Houses of the Holy, the studio ruled the ’70s.
“Bardo”
Academy Award-winning director Alejandro G. Iñárritu premiered the visually stunning epic “Bardo, falsa crónica de unas cuantas verdades” at the 2022 Venice Film Festival. The film tells the journey of Silverio, a renowned Mexican journalist and documentary filmmaker who, after winning an international award, returns to his native country, unaware of what the trip has in store for him. “Bardo” stars Daniel Giménez Cacho, Griselda Siciliani, Ximena Lamadrid, Iker Sanchez Solano, Andrés Almeida, and Francisco Rubio.
