Apparently, if you want to produce a biopic about a rock star that rose to prominence in the ‘70s, filmmaker Dexter Fletcher is your guy. After the debacle that was Bryan Singer’s exit from “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Fletcher was brought on to handle the final weeks of filming and post-production of the Queen/Freddie Mercury biopic. And it looks awesome. Now, the filmmaker is beginning the marketing for his latest upcoming biopic about Elton John, titled “Rocketman,” and we have the first look at the young Taron Egerton as the very stylish performer.
When you think of Elton John, a couple things spring to mind. First, the man has an undeniable style. Throughout his music career, John has shown a taste for clothing that is a bit…louder than most. And Egerton is showing that in spades, with a gold jacket, boots with gold tips and gold wings, and of course, the signature glasses that are bedazzled to hell. It’s spot on Elton John.
The second part of the equation is the singer’s voice. He has a very unique, and beautiful, singing voice. Unfortunately, pictures can’t convey that. However, Egerton has proven in the past, specifically on the animated film “Sing,” that he has a great voice. Yes, I watched “Sing.”
It’ll be interesting to see how Fletcher differentiates the style of “Bohemian Rhapsody” from “Rocketman.” On paper, the stories seem very similar, with films focusing on incredible singers in a time of great excess. That being said, even if the filmmaker presents films that are very much alike, if they’re both good, no one will complain.
“Rocketman” is expected to hit theaters on May 17, 2019.
