Sometimes an artist presents a vision that has no words or explanation, but the visuals are so rich that you are fascinated and moved. Obviously, this is the key to any sort of visual art such as painting. And it’s exactly what makes painter Simon Stålenhag so great. His unique work has showcased pictures of normal landscapes with some sort of retro-future tech in a way that just begs for some sort of adaptation. Enter “Tales from the Loop.”

As seen in the first trailer for “Tales from the Loop,” the Amazon series takes Stålenhag’s paintings that have earned him a legion of fans and turned them into a whole world with a rich history and characters. Not much is explained in the trailer, as the visuals seem to take center stage, showcasing a world that looks exactly like rural America but with the inclusion of robots, futuristic prosthetics, and advanced vehicles. And unlike cyberpunk sci-fi like “Blade Runner,” the inclusion of robots in our world is shown to be somehow beautiful and not dystopian.
The series has an incredible cast that includes Rebecca Hall, Paul Schneider, Duncan Joiner, Daniel Zolghardi, and Jonathan Pryce. “Tales from the Loop” is produced and written by Nathaniel Halpern, who is probably best known for his work as a writer on series such as “Legion” and “Outcast.”
“Tales from the Loop” premieres on Amazon on April 3. The series will first make its debut at SXSW next month.
Here’s the synopsis:
Inspired by the wondrous paintings of Simon Stålenhag, Tales from the Loop explores the mind-bending adventures of the people who live above the Loop, a machine built to unlock and explore the mysteries of the universe – making things previously relegated to science fiction, possible.
