Anti-Oscar Bait: There’s So Much More To Discuss About ‘Suspiria,’ ‘Burning,’ & ‘Border’ [Adjust Your Tracking Podcast]

Everything comes in threes on this episode of Adjust Your Tracking, but that may not always be a good thing. Joe and I start things off with some thoughts on the newly released Swedish fairy tale film “Border” (Playlist review here). “Border” will expand to more theaters in the next few weeks. As will our two main films of discussion, “Burning” and “Suspiria.”

21st-century South Korean cinema has provided us with some landmark movies and several of the most exciting auteur voices working in the industry. Yet Lee Chang-dong, master of complex modern epic melodramas such as “Poetry” and “Secret Sunshine,” has never quite received the attention he deserves. We hope that changes with the release of his latest film “Burning.” Based on a short story by Haruki Murakami and praised at Cannes this year, it’s a gorgeously surreal affair about two men, a woman, her cat (maybe) and a mystery plot built upon class struggle, damaged drifters and unrequited love. It’s a fantastic film, and we think you should seek it out as it expands to other cities in the coming weeks.

“Suspiria” is, of course, the remake of the original Dario Argento masterwork from 1977. And holy cow is this a beast of a film, completely on its own wavelength and often brilliantly finding its own path with the same building blocks as the original (our original review). I’ve never seen a more pretentious horror film than this remake, and no doubt will divide audiences, but I’m rather shocked to admit I love this new work by Luca Guadagnino. My co-host has… other thoughts. And so, we discuss!
