Surprise: Richard Linklater Has Completed ‘Before Midnight’ With Ethan Hawke & Julie Delpy

null

First up, the rumor was Richard Linklater's "Before Midnight," the supposed follow-up to "Before Sunrise"/"Before Sunset" was unexpectedly shooting in Greece just a few weeks after Julie Delpy told us that the project had a least a year to go before shooting. Ethan Hawke seemed to echo Delpy's sentiments recently: he and Linklater were in Greece only writing the film.

All the while our Greek friends at Flix were insisting the film was shooting despite the actors claiming otherwise. Turns out they were right all along (and we should have listened to those emails). Deadline reports that not only was "Before Midnight" — its confirmed official title — shooting in Greece all along, but it's actually completed its principal photography.

The third film of this trilogy, Delpy and Hawke are obviously reprising their roles as star-crossed lovers Celine and Jesse. The script was once again scripted by Linklater, Delpy and Hawke (they earned a 2005 screewriting nomination for "Before Sunrise"), and obviously they shot this on the sly (for the most part).

The trio released a statement: “It’s great to be back together again, this time in beautiful Greece to revisit the lives of Celine and Jesse nine years after Jesse was about to miss his flight.” This alludes to the end of "Before Sunset," where Jesse was indeed about to miss his flight back home to the U.S. and possibly finally take a step forward with his relationship with Celine. The ending was quite the cliffhanger. So what happens nine years later? While no sizzle real for "Before Midnight" will arrive in TIFF, buyers will be anxious to hear about it and presumably the film will come along with a 2013 release date when a sale is made. A first look image of the new movie is above.

  1. I just love those 2 movies and am watching them for what – the 50th time? – today. Julie Delpy is an interesting lady, and I was sorry her appearance on ER was so short. Hope this comes out EARLY in 2013, if not before!

  2. Great news! Hawke and delpy are both very good actors! Can't wait to see this one, it's my second most anticipated movie of 2013 after James Gray's "Nightingale".

  3. Surprise indeed! This is great news. The reports of Hawke, Delpy and Linklater supposedly writing in Greece caught my attention a week or two ago and just last night, with a few hours spare, I sat down to re-watch both the original and the sequel. They are beautiful, bitter-sweet films with wonderful dialogue and realistic characters that actually have something to say about their shared and isolated experiences and the human condition. I can't wait to see this third one!

  4. So psyched. I love that they were able to sneak off and film it without being bothered. Can't wait to see it & I hope this means they will FINALLY release the first two films on Blu-ray.
