Summer 2022 TV Preview: Over 35 Shows To Watch

“The Kids in the Hall”
From 1988 to 1995, Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson were known for their performances in the iconic Canadian comedy troupe “Kids in the Hall.” The Emmy-nominated series ran on HBO, CBC, and CBS. With the exception of a movie “The Kids in the Hall: Brain Candy” and a reunion special “Death Comes to Town,” this new season will be the first we’ve seen them together for over 15 years as a proper sketch series. The original cast will also be joined by their old executive producer, SNL’s Lorne Michaels.
Premiere: May 13 on Prime Video.

“The Essex Serpent”
Based on the 2016 novel by Sarah Perry, the story explores fantasy, religion, fate, and love. Claire Danes stars as Cora Seaborne, a widow who moves to Essex to investigate reports of a mythical serpent and forms a bond with the village pastor, Will Ransome, played by Tom Hiddleston. The six-episode series is written by Anny Symon and will be directed by acclaimed U.K. filmmaker Clio Barnard (“Ali and Ava”). Read our review.
Premiere: May 13, 2022, on Apple TV.

“Conversations with Friends”
From the essentially same creative team behind the hit limited series “Normal People”—director Lenny Abrahamson (“Room”) and his team, once again adapting the work of acclaimed novelist Sally Rooney—“Conversations With Friends” follows Frances, a 21-year-old college student, as she navigates her relationships and confronts her vulnerabilities. While Joe Alwyn, Jemima Kirke, and Sasha Lane star, like “Normal People” which put relative unknowns in the leads, ‘Friends’ is led by Alison Oliver, fresh out of Irish drama school.
Premiere Date:  May 15, 2022, on Hulu.

“The Time Traveler’s Wife”
Based on the book by the same title, “The Time Traveler’s Wife” is a love story for the ages. While the film adaptation received mixed reviews, HBO’s creative team, director David Nutter (“Game of Thrones”) and writer Steven Moffat (“Doctor Who” and “Sherlock’’), can reinvigorate properties with good ideas. Theo James and Rose Leslie (“Game of Thrones”) play the leads alongside Caitlin Shorey and Peter Graham.
Premieres: May 15 on HBO and HBO Max.

“The Ipcress File”
Those in the know, know “The Ipcress File” as a terrific trilogy of 1960s spy films, based on Len Deighton’s novels starring Michael Caine. This ITV and AMC+ reboot follows ex-smuggler Harry Palmer (Joe Cole), who finds himself undercover trying to find a missing British nuclear scientist during the Cold War. The six-episode series also stars Lucy Boynton, Tom Hollander, and Ashley Thomas. Already out in the United Kingdom, the series is sitting pretty with a 92% on the Tomatometer.
Premiere Date: May 19 on AMC+ and Sundance Now.

“Angelyne”
In the 1980s there weren’t social media platforms, but some can argue that singer, actress, media personality, and model, Angelyne was the first-ever influencer. Popping up on billboards all over Lost Angeles, the would-be starlet sped around town in her pink car, pioneering the idea of being famous just because. An unrecognizable Emmy Rossum stars, bringing a Hollywood Reporter article on Angelyne’s to life in Peacock’s limited series. “Angelyne” also stars Alex Karpovsky, Jefferson Hall, Lukas Gage, and Charlie Rowe.
Premieres: May 19 on Peacock.

“Now And Then”
A multi-layered thriller that explores the differences between youthful aspirations and the reality of adulthood, “Now And Then” follows a group of college friends whose lives are changed forever when one of them ends up dead after a celebratory weekend. The show stars Marin Fajardo, Gala Bichir, Mateo Guerrero, Jimmy Shar, and Ella Kweku, as well as Academy Award nominees Marina de Tavira and Rosie Perez.
Premiere Date: May 20 on Apple TV+.
