Summer 2023 Movie Preview: 52 Must-See Films To Watch

“They Cloned Tyrone” 
The official synopsis states, “A series of eerie events thrusts an unlikely trio onto the trail of a nefarious government conspiracy.” This science-fiction, mystery, comedy film is the feature directorial debut for Juel Taylor, who also penned the screenplay with Tony Rettenmaier. The film stars John Boyega, Teyonah Parris, Kiefer Sutherland, and Jamie Foxx. This film will premiere at the American Black Film Festival on June 14. 
Release Date: June 21 on Netflix. 

“Asteroid City”
A Junior Stargazer convention is flipped on its head by world-changing events. The film, of course, is another visually stunning work from Wes Anderson with a star-studded cast. Among those you’ll see on screen are Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Steve Park, Steve Carrell, Willem Dafoe, Margot Robbie, Tony Revolori, and Jeff Goldblum. The film was written by Anderson and Roman Coppola.
Release Date: June 23 via Focus Features.

“No Hard Feelings”
When a delivery driver finds herself down on her luck and desperate for cash, she accepts a Craigslist ad from a couple seeking someone to date their son. The coming-of-age comedy stars Jennifer Lawrence, Andrew Barth Feldman, Matthew Broderick, and Laura Benanti. 
Release Date: June 23 via Sony and Columbia Pictures. 

“Harold and the Purple Crayon”
Based on the 1955 Crockett Johnson children’s book of the same name, the story focuses on a boy named Harold who embarks on a magical mission with the help of his purple crayon. The film adaption stars Zachary Levi, Lil Rel Howery, Zooey Deschanel, Camille Guaty, and Tanya Reynolds. The film is directed by Carlos Saldanha.
Release Date: June 30 via Sony and Columbia Pictures.

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”
What do we know about this film? Honestly, not much. It is the highly-anticipated follow-up to “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” but is not directed by Steven Speilberg, but instead by James MangoldHarrison Ford returns in the lead role alongside Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, and Antonio Banderas
Release Date: June 30 via Disney/Lucasfilm.

“Biosphere”
Described as a post-apocalyptic meets buddy humor film, “Biosphere” focuses on the not-too-distant future where the last two men on earth, who happen to be best friends, must evolve and adapt to save all of humanity. The film stars Sterling K. Brown and Mark Duplass, who co-wrote the film with director Mel Eslyn.
Release Date: July 7 via IFC Films

“Insidious: The Red Door”
Ten years after the first two “Insidious” films, Josh Lambert sees his son, Dalton, off to college. Dalton’s idyllic ivy-league dream, however, quickly becomes a nightmare when past demons return to haunt him. The film stars Patrick Wilson, who also directed the film, along with Ty Simpkins, Rose Byrne, and Hiam Abbass. 
Release Date: July 7 via Sony. 

“Joy Ride”
A favorite of the SXSW Film Festival this year, “Joy Ride” is the directorial debut of Adele Lim, who co-wrote the film. The film follows four Asian-American friends as they travel through Asia in search of one of their biological mothers. The film stars Ashley Park, Stephanie Hsu, Sabrina Wu, and Sherry Cola.
Release Date: July 7 via Lionsgate

“Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning Part 1”
The first time audiences saw Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt was back in 1996. Here we are, 27 years later, gearing up for another installment in the “Mission: Impossible franchise. Familiar faces such as Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, and Rebecca Ferguson are returning, and we will see Esai Morales playing the villain. 
Release Date: July 12 via Paramount Pictures. 

“Afire”
Originally titled “Roter Himmel,” “Afire” tells the story of a group of friends staying in a vacation home in the Baltic when the forest around them catches fire, causing them to become trapped and igniting their emotions. The film stars Thomas Schubert, Paula Beer, Enno Trebs, Langston Uibel, and Matthias Brandt. “Afire” premiered in February at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Release date: July 14 via Sideshow.
