Hayao Miyazaki Ends Retirement, Studio Ghibli Confirms Director Is Working On A New Feature Film

Three years ago, beloved filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki announced that he was retiring, and the blow was doubled for fans because right at the same time, his longtime home Studio Ghibli revealed they were no longer going to be putting new movies into production. But it seems Miyazaki would prefer to stay busy. Last fall, word surfaced that he was working on “Kemushi no Boro” (“Boro The Caterpillar“), a short film for the Ghibli Museum. Along with that chatter was the revelation that Miyazaki had a feature in mind, and was already storyboarding it — and indeed, we could seen another movie from the filmmaker.

During a chat for the Oscar nominated “The Red Turtle,” Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki confirmed that Miyazaki was working on a new film. A report in Kyodo News adds, “Right now in Tokyo, he’s putting all his effort into making it [the feature].” For now, details about the movie are under wraps, but the aim is to have it in cinemas for the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan, presumably to avoid release-date-scheduling issues that might arise from the global event.

Any new feature from Miyazaki is one we’ll gladly embrace, so we’ll be patient and let him work his magic once again — we can’t wait to see the result. [Kotaku]
