‘Stillwater’ Trailer: Matt Damon Is An Red State Dad In France, Trying To Save His Daughter, Directed By ‘Spotlight’ Oscar-Winner Tom McCarthy

It’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything from Academy Award winner Tom McCarthy, the director of “Spotlight,” and his dramatic thriller, “Stillwater,” which was seemingly shot a long time ago but delayed by the pandemic. Starring Matt Damon, Abigail Breslin, and Camille Cottin, “Stilwater” centers on a father who travels from Oklahoma to France to help his daughter, who has been arrested for murder.

The film is finally coming out on July 30th, and after more than a year of silence, we’re finally getting a trailer and first look from Focus Features. Here’s the official synopsis, and check out Damon’s thick Oklahoma accent.

A dramatic thriller directed by Academy Award® winner Tom McCarthy and starring Matt Damon, Stillwater follows an American oil-rig roughneck from Oklahoma who travels to Marseille to visit his estranged daughter in prison for a murder she claims she did not commit. Confronted with language barriers, cultural differences, and a complicated legal system, Bill builds a new life for himself in France as he makes it his personal mission to exonerate his daughter.

This one feels like a no-frills movie; almost anyone can relate to a father doing absolutely anything he can to save his daughter. “Stillwater” opens in theaters on July 30. Watch the first trailer below.
