Got a Tip?

Still Waiting For That ‘Inherent Vice’ Trailer? Here’s An 8-Minute Tribute To The Films Of Paul Thomas Anderson

Boogie Nights Paul Thomas Anderson Don Cheadle John C. ReillyFans of Paul Thomas Anderson, easily one of the most important contemporary American directors, have a lot to be excited about this fall. Those with a New York zip code might be able to check out his new psychedelic-noir project “Inherent Vice," based on Thomas Pynchon’s novel and starring recent Anderson favorite Joaquin Phoenix as a drug-fueled private eye, when it premieres as the centerpiece during the New York Film Festival. The rest of us will have to wait a couple months in excruciating anticipation until Warner Bros. releases it in select theaters on December 12th, before it goes wide from there on January 9, 2015.

Until fans get their brand spanking new Anderson fix (or even the whisper of a trailer), here’s an eight-minute tribute to his oeuvre by Vimeo user Daniel Silva to perhaps remind everyone just how much he developed as a versatile filmmaker over the course of only six features. Although containing a certain flow, the editing itself feels a bit too random and doesn’t provide much of a thematic through line.

Regardless of what one might think of the tribute’s technical prowess, it will more than likely inspire Anderson’s fans to dive into their DVD and Blu-ray collections in order to conduct a personal PTA retrospective in the comfort of their own homes, which might have been Silva’s goal in the first place. Check it out below. [35MM]

  1. Not sure how The Playlist is going to survive after losing McBride. You guys better get on the ball and go right back to your previous design, pronto. Every second that McBride isn\’t here is a second that you will regret for the rest of your insignificant lives. For shame.

  2. What the heck is the point of having the entire first paragraph in bold at the top & then repeating it directly below as part of the article???

  3. I love the works of PTA with all my heart, but that collection of clips is so poorly edited and slapped together that it actually makes his films look less than great. Just terrible editing and pace.

  4. yea in regards to this new layout… your proofreading/grammar was bad enough before but now you seem to be repeating the first paragraph of every story.

  5. Not sure why the new design is so "horrendous", it looks alright to me. I sure am appreciating not to type my whole email adress each time I want to say something. Could be better but still an improvement.

  6. You do know this video is over a year old, right? Also, your new design is horrendous. You\’ve just lost a viewer, along with what I\’m sure is many more.
