Got a Tip?

Steven Spielberg Uses His Phone To Make His Music Video Directorial Debut For Marcus Mumford’s ‘Cannibal’

There are a ton of massive filmmakers who get their start in music video production. Folks like David Fincher, Spike Jonze, and many more directed music videos well before they became A-list feature filmmakers. It’s nice to see that happening even today, with Marcus Mumford enlisting an up-and-coming filmmaker like Steven Spielberg to direct his new music video, “Cannibal.”

Kidding aside, Spielberg did, in fact, step behind the camera to make his music video directorial debut for “Cannibal,” the latest single from Mumford. The video is shot in black and white, using a smartphone camera, and done in one continuous shot. So, not only did Spielberg decide to step into the world of short-form music video filmmaking with “Cannibal” but he’s going very indie to make it happen.

Mumford shared the particulars on his Instagram, along with a behind-the-scenes picture from the shoot, showing just how low-budget Spielberg went for the video.

“On Sunday 3rd July in a high school gym in New York, Steven Spielberg directed his first music video, in one shot, on his phone. Kate Capshaw was the almighty dolly grip,” said Mumford.

Along with his message about the production, Mumford also listed the credits. While Spielberg and Capshaw get their due, there is also a pretty famous costumer and sound technician working on the video—Carey Mulligan. Of course, that makes sense once you realize that Mulligan and Mumford have been married for a number of years now.
