Got a Tip?

Steven Spielberg To Direct ‘Robopocalypse’

That’s An Apocalypse With Robots

When a movie is attached to a director for a long enough time, eventually something will stick. That is the case with Steven Spielberg as he’s signed to helm “Robopocalypse,” a project that has been linked to him for pretty much the whole year.

If you recall, back in March, Steven Spielberg was rumored to be circling an adaptation of the upcoming novel “Robopocalypse,” from author Daniel H. Wilson about an epic war between the human race and robots (as the title might suggest). The rumor came and went. Then last month, a fresh frenzy began when Drew Goddard (“Cloverfield“) delivered a fresh script that crossed Spielberg’s desk at DreamWorks. Agents were at the ready to jump on the project if Spielberg passed on it, but it looks like he’s taken a shine to the material.

The project will keep Spielberg busy for the foreseeable future. He’s currently shooting the WWI drama “War Horse” which he will be prepping for a December 28, 2011 release. On top of that, he’s also got “Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn” opening five days before on December 23, 2011 (we’re still in mild disbelief; and we figure one of those two films are going to move out of the way). And with “Robopocalypse” certainly set to be an effects heavy project, we would wager Spielberg will be going straight into pre-production on that film once he’s stamped “War Horse” and ‘Tintin’ as finished.

The project seems to fall into Spielberg’s usual pattern of blockbuster followed by drama/Oscar bait. And while this writer hasn’t been a fan of any of the Spielberg blockbusters since “Minority Report,” it is exciting to find him back in the sci-fi realm for what should be a very intriguing project. Just keep out the Daddy issues this time, please. Spielberg will start shooting in January 2012 and the film will hit theaters via Disney’s Touchstone in 2013.
