Well, this news just keeps getting better and better. Last month, Scott Frank revealed that Netflix was going to back his long developing western "Godless," and even more, it was being expanded from a feature film into a miniseries. Now, someone who Frank hoped would direct the project himself years ago has now signed on to executive-produce.
Steven Soderbergh brings his recent TV skills ("The Knick," "The Girlfriend Experience") to "Godless," taking on the EP role for the Netflix series. Soderbergh had long been a fan of script, but declined doing it himself, citing among other things, an aversion to shooting actors on horses. "It’s too bad I don’t like Westerns because Scott Frank has an original western that he’s written that’s spectacularly good, like great," Soderbergh told us in 2012.

According to Frank, the limited series will span six one-hour episodes about an outlaw who has to rely on town run by women for his survival in 1884.
"It is essentially the story of a severely wounded outlaw who ends up in this mining town in New Mexico, where all the able-bodied men have died in the mine. It’s run all by women," he told Collider in 2007. "He ends up on a ranch just outside of town with the one woman the other women have ostracized and who’s nursing him back to health. Who he realizes are coming after him are his old gang members or fellow outlaws, laying waste to every town they come to, and you realize they’re coming here soon and it’s really that’s sort of the bare bones of the plot. It would be like me telling you ‘The Lookout‘ is about a guy who robs a bank. It’s all about these characters and the relationships between all these people, and his relationship with the guy who’s coming for him. It all comes to a head in the middle of this town full of women."
Frank will direct "Godless," which is set to shoot this summer in Santa Fe, and if it were possible, we’d be adding this to our Netflix queue already. [THR]
